What authorities reported

Deputies said they were pursuing a stolen vehicle allegedly driven by Emmitt Singleton. During the pursuit, the vehicle struck curbs and crossed a grassy median. Investigators said Singleton opened the driver's door and fell from the moving vehicle.

The now-unoccupied vehicle reportedly ran over him, then struck a pole before stopping. Singleton was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Investigation and charges

The Harris County Sheriff's Office Vehicular Crimes Division was investigating. The report did not identify any charges filed in connection with the incident. A police allegation or arrest does not establish guilt.

What remains unknown

  • When and where the vehicle was originally stolen
  • The make and model of the vehicle
  • Whether any other people were injured
  • Whether charges will be filed after the investigation

Safety takeaway

Vehicle owners should not attempt to follow or confront someone in a stolen vehicle. Report an active theft to 911, provide the license plate, VIN and tracker information if available, and let law enforcement coordinate the recovery.
